Artist's Note:
Death Valley National Park holds a special place in my heart, and Eureka Dunes is by and far my favorite spot to go. Without any services and with almost no other visitors, it truly feels like a return to nature. On this day in spring of 2018, my partner and I went to climb these dunes, the tallest in California, and when I saw this person climbing ahead of us, I hurried to pull out my camera.
I’ve been sitting on this image for the past few years, and, no matter how I edited it, I never liked the way it turned out. Recently, however, as we settled into the lockdown that we now find ourselves in, something clicked. We can see the path from a previous climber who made it to the top, and now there’s another person following in their footsteps, struggling to ascend but aided by the trail from those who came before. To me, this is a powerful metaphor for our current situation and shows how we need to rely on each other.
